the vancouver goldeneyes lost their first game after the olympic break, and instead of hearing "golden" by harry styles as we exited pacific coliseum, they played "i'll believe in anything" by wolf parade. the song is the centrepiece of the climactic moment in episode 5 of heated rivalry. "give me / your eyes / i need / sunshine" plays as our hero, closeted hockey player scott hunter, searches the stands for the man he loves. it's about his victory, but it's also about how hard and scary everything is. "nobody knows you / and nobody gives a damn"

"golden" is our victory song because "loving you's the antidote," but when we lose, it's good to remember to "believe in anything."

(spencer krug, the lead singer of wolf parade, just released a new solo piano version of the song, which he debuted at a show here in vancouver.)

i have a new video up! over my birthday at the end of december, i went to victoria and visited the ross bay cemetery to see where emily carr is buried. it took a while, but i finally edited my clips into something. i always have the best intentions. i have dozens of clips from my nyc trip last april, a hike i took to a park i wrote a zine about, a haunted cocktail party i went to last year—all still in pieces on my hard drive.

so this year, i want to try something. i'm calling it "a year of repurposing." i want to make more, but with less. since 2001, i've been posting ~stuff on the internet. some of it hits harder (10k views!) than others. but i don't want it to disappear into the black hole we call our attention span. i want to bring it back to the light. so i'm remaking, remixing, re-editing or just finally editing for the first time. i want to make zines into videos and videos into zines and turn my best facial expressions into gifs. i want to comb 25 years of my archives and find the words to write book 2.

to that end, i also pulled this 4 minute clip out of my last zine stream. it's about how hard it is to make a thing, but also how easy it can be, if you let it.

some good reblogs this month

go make a thing! (and then tell me about it!)
