In addition to the big red chicken there was a sack of carrots which had fallen from a vegetable truck, half a dozen onions which had not.

This sentence from Steinbeck’s Cannery Row is a spiritual brother of Williams’s The Red Wheelbarrow.

When you collect marine animals there are certain flat worms so delicate that they are almost impossible to capture whole, for they break and tatter under the touch. You must let them ooze and crawl of their own will onto a knife blade and then lift them gently into your bottle of sea water. And perhaps that might be the way to write this book–to open the page and to let the stories crawl in by themselves.

John Steinbeck, Cannery Row.

I don’t know when it happened (10 years I’ve been reading Sports Night fic? Crazy!), but I stopped wanting Dan and Casey together a long time ago. It’s not that I’m a big Casey/Dana ‘shipper or that I don’t believe Dan is very very gay. Weirdly, my favourite stories are still the stories with Charlie and, like, being dads and eating cereal and watching cartoons. I just want to read lots about Dan and Casey being BFFs.

Rereading The O.C. fic, and I realise the same thing has happened. This is how it works for me: they get together during The Pilot, The Model Home, The Gamble, before Ryan officially moves in or they meet in an alternate universe. Other than that, I just want to read stories about Ryan and Seth being BFFs.

Also, stories about the SGA team being BFFs.

Have I actually grown out of porn?
