ages ago, i saw the seinfeld ep “the contest” again, and wrote this in my notebook:

George=Rodney
Jerry=John
Elaine=Teyla
Kramer=Ronon

anyone interested in reading over for me the story that inevitably followed?

i had put last night’s ep of the o.c. so out of my head, i forgot to complain about the music. luckily, i have callmesandy to remind me.

i’m someone who adores a lot of bad covers. because, most of the time, you do a cover because you love a song. i love hilary and haylie duff’s cover of “our lips are sealed”, not because those girls can sing without the aid of modulators, but because they sound like they’re having so much fun. and that’s what the go-go’s were always about.

but, man, to turn “lover i don’t have to love” into a sad, whiny, marissa-on-the-lifeguard-tower song pains me, as a music fan, even before i can complain, as a writer, about this marissa-on-the-lifeguard-tower=sad laziness.

the canucks played the red wings in a hockey game, and they lost 3 to 7.

the seventh inning stretch came in the third period when the hometown crowd got up to their feet to cheer, not for a goal, but for a two minute penalty for abuse of the referee.

sometimes, even i can’t believe the songs that get stuck in my head. i passed this one on the country music channel as i was making my way up the dial to the food network. that was weeks ago, but i’ve been singing it all day, and that’s what they say makes a great song. the catchy ones hit me like this: almost instant disdain, but they stick with me, and soon enough i’ve got it on itunes, i’m hiding it on my ipod, and i’m singing the words under my breath when i catch it in a restaurant.

i’ve read enough rockist music crit in my life to make a resolution: all music is pleasure, no music is guilty.

Bon Jovi feat. Jennifer Nettles – Who says you can’t go home

I asked: i have oatmeal raisin cookies from kt that are so good and chewy, just the way i like them. what did you use? butter, margarine, or shortening?

KT replied:

Butter. So much butter. Now that I look at it, the recipe appears to be a modified version of the one printed on the Quaker Oats container lids. The technique is just a little weird.

Anyway, oatmeal cookies:
Cream 2 sticks unsalted butter with 3/4 of a cup of white sugar and 3/4 of a cup of packed brown sugar with a mixer. You know the drill– beat till fluffy. Beat in two eggs, one at a time.

In a separate bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups oatmeal, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (I usually err towards 1 1/2 – 2 t. of that last). Stir all that up and make sure it’s well combined before you start adding it to the wet ingredients. Add just a little at a time, stirring it in with a wooden spoon.

Once you’ve got your batter, stir in 1 cup raisins and, here’s the weird part, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon hot (not boiling) water. I’ve no idea why you add these at this point and I haven’t tried just adding them to the wet, so I don’t know if it would make the end product all wonky or what.

Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes on a silpat/greased cookie sheet/parchment paper. They’re tricky and look done before they are, so test ’em with a toothpick.
